Transitions and Stage Banter

You must have a reason you are going to speak to the audience during your show, so you need to work on what you’re going to say.

For several years, I hosted a radio show with my wife Skylar that aired on a couple different stations and as a podcast on iTunes. One of the many guests who appeared on the show was contemporary Christian artist Chris August. 

Bread of Stone shared the stage with Chis when he had a full band backing him. However, my most memorable show of his was on a snowy spring day in Cheyenne, Wyoming, which I attended with Skylar and her family. 

In our later radio interview with Chris, I referenced that particular concert, and I complimented him on all the humor he used throughout his show. He said that he has a friend who is a comedian, and his friend told Chris that he was naturally funny and that he thought Chris could pull off a humorous routine during his concerts. His friend gave him some pointers and off Chris went!

Later, Chris shared with us that he works on his jokes just as much as the music in his set list. That is precisely why a Chris August show is so entertaining!

Just like live song arrangement and stage movement, stage banter needs to be done with a purpose. In order to have a purpose in what you’re going to say throughout the show, you need to put some work into it. You don’t have to script out every single word you’ll speak, but talking points should be worked through during rehearsals. Speaking to the audience should never be an afterthought. And as a lead singer, the audience expects you to speak to them.
