Make or Break a Fan

It is an ongoing pursuit to create an entertaining and engaging live show

I remember one of the last tours I was on with a previous band. We played a show at a venue owned by a radio station. At the end of the night, a well-dressed man walked over to our merch table. After we complimented him on how dressed up he was for a rock show, he said that he came straight from work. In fact, he heard the event advertised, as he was leaving work. He told us he immediately turned his car around to attend the show because he’d been hearing our music on the radio and wanted to see us live.

At the time, that was a cool story and quite flattering for us to hear. Looking back on it, I really wonder if we made that man a fan for life or if we potentially lost him as a fan. Our band rocked! However, that’s pretty much all we did. I had tried to convince the group that we needed to work on providing an experience for our audience, but we never really worked on anything apart from playing our music well. We jumped around onstage. We brought the energy. And not much else. We made a solid opening act, but I believe we could’ve done more to connect with people from the stage.

Today, music artists have access to all sorts of production to present a high-tech show, but the production should only be a tool for you to connect with those in attendance. It should enhance what you are already doing! So, first thing’s first: play your music well. Work on your showmanship as individuals, and collectively as a group. Build live song arrangements that better involve the audience, and work through transitions that give you the freedom to be led in a different direction each show.

It is an ongoing pursuit to create an entertaining and engaging live show, but in the long run, the goal is to connect with fans and form real relationships with them that LAST.
