The Utility Player

I believe there are two main forms of entertainment that unite the world – music and soccer. In the last several posts, I’ve been comparing each band member’s position to that of a soccer player’s.

Today’s post is primarily for the utility players, but everyone can learn something. Maybe this can help a band know exactly what to look for when shopping for a multi-instrumentalist. But if you are a multi-instrumentalist or a type of utility player yourself, set down whatever instrument you are playing, and let’s go!

Utility Players – someone who plays multiple instruments – is the Outside Halfback. You support both the defense and offense. You help hold down the rhythm section, but you also can shine. You probably are musically diverse and possibly the most talented musician within your group. If you aren’t necessarily a utility player quite yet, but you have an interest in learning more instruments, I strongly encourage it. Having diversity with various instruments can really add a lot to a performance.

I once had a conversation with an artist who was a multi-instrumentalist and I asked him why he only played guitar in his show. He shared with me that for years he thought if he switched instruments during his performance, it may come across like he's showing off. I told him that God gave him the ability to play all these instruments. He just needed to shift all his focus on playing his instruments for HIM and not thinking of himself.

Be Visual in Your Playing

Have Great Tones and Phrasing

Able to Direct the Audience’s Attention

Able to Sing BGVs is a Major Plus and maybe even Lead a Song
