Artistic Deception
Don’t fall into the deception of thinking your show needs no improvements. It can always be better.
As a Christian, I believe the day we arrive is the day we die. However, until we depart this world, we all still have a purpose to fulfill here. The day we stop living or striving to better ourselves in everything we do, is the day we start dying, whether physically, spiritually or in our careers.
I once had an artist share with me how he would get frustrated with the audience at times when they weren’t paying attention when he would speak or when they weren’t fully present during much of the band’s performance. The songs weren’t the problem; they simply didn’t know what else to do. The band worked on the songs. They all played well, and they arranged a pretty solid set list, but the group wasn't able to fully connect with their audience through the music and through the message he would share.
The truth is, if you’re having fun onstage, it doesn’t mean the audience is having fun. If you’re feeling the music and the connection with your songs, that doesn’t mean the audience is feeling that same connection.
It takes some humility to admit that we need help with something. A lot of times I personally don’t like asking for help. We have to know what areas we’re skilled in and build a team of people who are more skillful in areas we aren’t - (I’ll share more about the team that I have in a later post).
