Auditions - Pt. 1 (The Artist)

An audition process can be extremely intimidating and your nerves can easily take the spotlight.

If you’re a music artist looking for a band, a band looking for a new member or a musician searching for an opportunity to audition for a group, these next two posts are especially for you.

First, for the ones looking for new band members, it is extremely important to find the right people. I work with a few artists where the lead singer is the actual artist, and they hire a band to back them. In this scenario, I like to use the band For King & Country when talking with artists who are looking for new band members. Their show is completely different and is way more impactful with having such a large band. Before, it was just the two brothers, Luke and Joel, and a very small backing band. Their show today means so much more, having a group of guys willing and able to run around and play various instruments! If For King & Country didn’t have the right band members willing to work as a team, it wouldn’t work.

I, personally, like auditions being a three-step process. This is what my audition looked like when I joined Bread of Stone in 2014. First, I sent them a video audition. Next, I had a phone interview with our lead vocalist, Ben. And lastly, I came out to audition with the band in person.

However, my in-person audition was probably very different than most. I played to a pre-recorded band rehearsal while the brothers, Ben and Bill, were in the studio watching and able see my timing on the grid. Talk about nerve wracking!

I recommend this three-step process because it saves the artist a lot of time in the search. If you are impressed enough with a video, proceed to a phone conversation. If that goes well, bring them in to audition in person.

1. Video Audition

2. Remote Interview

3. In-Person Audition

If you would like to go more in-depth in what I recommend the entire process to look like, I’d love to connect with you to help! You can also read the next post directed to the musician to get more of an idea of the type of person to look for.
